Pilates-Based Physical Therapy (PBPT)
Pilates-Based Physical Therapy (PBPT) at InsideOut Body Therapies is an approach to healing that is grounded in the moving body.
Utilizing the Pilates system and traditional physical therapy methods, our PTs assess and treat the whole person. Our team is adept at identifying and correcting problematic postural and movement patterns that cause pain. We believe that people can feel better when they move better.
Insurance Claims
InsideOut does not file claims with insurance companies, but can provide everything our clients need to file using their insurance policies. We provide clients with a claim form and an itemized bill to make filing as simple as possible.
If you plan to file with your insurance yourself, it is important to determine whether your insurance company requires a doctor’s referral before you begin PT. Although it is not an NC state requirement, some insurance companies require a physician’s referral to reimburse you for physical therapy services.
Medicare
InsideOut has no relationship with Medicare, so the law prevents us from providing Medicare patients with what would be considered “normally covered services”. If you are a Medicare beneficiary (including replacement and supplemental plans) who would like to request treatment at our clinic, please call us.
Benefits of Pilates-Based Physical Therapy (PBPT)
Pilates-Based Physical Therapy encourages clients to take an active role in their recovery processes. Clients are asked to engage in new ways of moving, listening to their bodies, and taking care of themselves. As active participants, clients maximize their benefits and shorten their healing times.
As clients learn to listen to their bodies more attentively, they can also prevent future injury. The IOBT team teaches our clients the skills they need to maintain their gains once treatment has ended. If clients are interested, we can also help them incorporate Pilates classes and/or individualized Pilates lessons into their post-treatment lives.
Our clients have successfully used PBPT to treat:
- Acute and chronic low back pain
- Sciatica
- Overuse injuries
- Tendonitis
- Headaches and neck pain
- Repetitive stress disorders
- Foot and ankle pain
- Postural issues
- Pelvic and spinal instability
- Shoulder pain
- Women’s health issues
- Orthopedic injuries
- Neurological and balance disorders
- Scoliosis
Back to Health Program at InsideOut Body Therapies: Bridging Physical Therapy to a Mindful Movement Practice
What is the Back to Health Program?
The Back to Health (BTH) Program is a system that includes sessions, workshops, classes, and a community for clients transitioning from physical therapy to independent movement programs. Classes are small in size and are structured to provide clients with a safe, supportive environment.
Instructors create adaptable sequences of mindful exercises that emphasize core strengthening, joint health, and overall flexibility. We use techniques from a variety of somatic practices to teach body awareness and strengthen healthy movement patterns while empowering participants to move – literally and figuratively – back to health.
Who can participate in the Back to Health (BTH) sessions, classes, and workshops?
All are welcome! Participants do not have to complete Pilates-Based Physical Therapy before enrolling in these sessions, classes, or workshops. In addition to being a bridge for many clients from physical therapy back to a movement practice, BTH sessions and workshops are also great preparation for Pilates equipment and floor classes!
The sessions are grounded in Pilates principles and also integrate other movement modalities and techniques (e.g., yoga fundamentals, light weight training, fit ball exercises). The goal of the Back to Health Program is to empower clients with healthy movement options to do anytime, anywhere.
Healthy Bones Program
The Healthy Bones (HB) program is a combination of workshops and classes focused on healthy, safe movement for clients who have osteopenia and osteoporosis. Our popular, weekly HB classes are fun, safe, and challenging for those wanting to build bones of steel!
In addition to practicing modified classical Pilates exercises, we maximize strength through weight-bearing exercises to improve balance and optimize posture. Clients leave each session taller than they arrived! Physical therapists and our Pilates teachers with special training in bone health teach all classes.

Frequently Asked Questions
A: Pilates-based Physical Therapy at InsideOut is founded on the idea that a small, patient-centered, movement-oriented approach to physical therapy offers patients an unrivaled possibility for healing. PBPT is grounded in the therapeutic movements and techniques of classical Pilates as well as traditional physical therapy modalities.
How we’re different than traditional PT:
- One primary therapist sees each client for the full course of their treatment.
- The therapist and the patient agree upon the time of treatment, which varies from 30-90 minutes of one-on-one care.
- Clients perform most therapeutic exercises on our Pilates equipment.
- We tailor our rehabilitation exercise programs to patients’ specific interests and needs.
- Patients receive the time and attention they need to ensure that specific muscle groups are being used correctly and in the proper sequence. This prevents potentially harmful movement patterns.
- Patients become active participants in their care through education about maintenance and injury prevention. This allows them to gain maximum benefit from physical therapy and gives them the ability to maintain strength and flexibility long after therapy ends.

A: The initial physical therapy session will include a thorough evaluation including a full postural and movement analysis during which we will assess asymmetries, alignment issues, and movement patterns.
Our PBPTs will evaluate patients’ joints and soft tissues, as well as the condition or injury presented. The physical therapist will communicate their observations and will develop an individualized plan of care to address the assessment, as well as the patient’s goals and concerns.
In addition to Pilates, we may utilize:
Manual therapy techniques such as soft tissue work and joint mobilizations.
Ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and heat and ice therapies to decrease pain, increase tissue healing, improve muscle contraction, and decrease inflammation.
A: Most patients are comfortable wearing standard workout wear such as shorts, leggings, tank tops, and t-shirts.
Your clothing should be breathable and should allow you to work within your full range of movement. As such, we do not recommend wearing streetwear such as jeans or tailored clothing. If you are sensitive to air-conditioning, you may opt to layer a sweatshirt over a tank or tee. Plan to be barefoot or bring a pair of socks.
A: We provide everything you will need for your Pilates-Based Physical Therapy sessions.
A: The length of a physical therapy treatment plan is highly individualized and depends on the specific diagnosis of each patient. Most patients receive therapy twice a week for four to six weeks, but this can vary based on need.
A: Upon completion of your PBPT plan of care, we can help you transition into classes and/or individualized Pilates lessons. This allows you to continue the strengthening and healing process and maintain the benefits you attained during physical therapy.
A: Yes. Should you wish to be evaluated without a physician’s referral, you can be treated, unless the therapist feels there is a need for further diagnostic testing or evaluation. If you are under the direct care of a physician, your PT will send her findings to your physician.
